In February of this year, Healy faced backlash after appearing on The Adam Friedland Show podcast. During the interview, he, along with hosts Friedland and Nick Mullen, made derogatory remarks about women and mocked various accents and languages, including indigenous Scots, Chinese, and Hawaiian.
Healy even encouraged the hosts to impersonate Japanese people in concentration camps and participated in this offensive behavior himself. At the time, Healy’s representative did not respond to The Independent’s request for comment.
Earlier this month, a 2016 interview resurfaced where Healy stated that dating Swift would be “emasculating,” in response to rumors of their brief relationship in 2014. The interview was widely criticized as “misogynistic,” although The Guardian published an op-ed defending Healy, titled “Matt Healy’s Comments About Taylor Swift Were Not Misogynistic.” Healy later clarified his remarks, stating they were taken out of context and confirming that he and Swift never dated
